basically, will it physically fit into a bug? any thoughts anyone?

nope! lol
http://www.tunacan.net/t4/howto/starting/

however my chop bug used to run a 914 engine....which is a type 4, just have to chop bug a bit, and convert to upright cooling, if goin the 911 fanshroud look route is very very dear!

a well setup 1600/1641 will go well....not as good as a decent type 4, but they are a lot heavier!
hope this helps
g

hehe, if your going to do a crazy swap go all the way. My dads Jag XJS is on its last legs. Maybe he'll let me have the 4.0 straight 6 for my golf... I could always sit on it if there no space left inside :p
