rusty66, one year old

Well I've now had this car a year and at long last it's not Rusty anymore!!!
Some of the wubblers will have may have seen some of these before. So heres the the progress over the last year from day one off the trailer up to yesterday.

Day one, virtually complete car with wrong bonnet that had been sat in a yard for the last 11 years and was very rusty.

After a days work I was left with these two.

New floors, narrowed the beam three inches all painted and rebuilt.

After inspecting the body decided that a lot of work was required. New front end from the bulkhead forwards, replace the a posts due to poor repairs prviously, new heater channels, new rear panel, bumper mounts and engine side trays.

After checking old repairs to the rear seat floor panel to rear wing repairs I found FIVE layers of poor repairs over the top of each other. After removeing them one by one revealed that there was no need for them at all as the main rear body mounts fitted were all ok!! Why do people do that???
Any way fitted a new rear floor panel, whilst doing so found corrosion in the lower rear window/engine bay rain drip chanel which needed replacing with a good used one.

The car at this point was basically solid now, but I still had to deal with the roof gutter rot. Do I repair or do I replace the whole thing.
The whole thing!!!!

Still had to repair the front screen lower corners and the rear lower sections of the rain gutter.

[/]

[/]

Had to make new front bumper mounts and remove the europa style mounts.

[/]

and modify the inner wings to clear the narrowed beam.

[/]

Its then been panel beating and repairing all the panels to prep them ready for priming.

So thats it roughly up to date. Hopefully I can get it fully primed and prepped next month and then painted.
Then I can finally build it back up with the boxes and boxes of parts I have been collecting for a year.[/img]

Thank you all for your comments.
I will update as and when I have anything to report, but I feel that there will not be a great deal to see until the shell has been painted and build up can be started.

You has massive balls.
rusty66

Brave, stupid or just into deep with rust?
Balls???
Just had to be repaired!!!

Not a lot of work this week.
Spent too long stripping off the paint fronm the rear air vents, modifying a slide hammer to remove the dented center section sanding down the plug welds and priming.

The offending dent.

Gear box may need a new thrust bearing!  Laughing  Laughing  Loooking good man!!   Cool

Ah be alright only a little bit of filler dust!!!
Least of my worries.

Todays work, get rid of the wing top mounting holes for the indicators and repair the damage to the wings.

The passengers front wing was quite badley dented and creased from the bumper being pushed into it.
Rougly reshaped the wing with a mallet and the metal finshed the dents out. Takes a while but is better than just filling it up.

Cleaned all the old underseal off ready for painting.

Spent the rest of the day attemtng to get the CRAP non genuine bonnet to fit.
Needless to say this was unsucessfull and is now in the scrap pile.

Geniune bonnet is now top of the shopping list!!!

jesus man that is some hefty work gone into that!! fair play thats dedication. are those porsche steels on it?
rusty66

Thanks.
Their standard one year only '66 wheels which look very similar to Porsche 356 wheels. They wont be staying on the car though as I have set of american Eagle polished 5 spokes for it.

Another month has gone by and I am still repairing the panels for priming and paint.

Stripped the doors back to bare metal and found one of them to not be as agood as first thought, it had a small rust hole in the middle of the skin??? Moisture had collected behind the sound pad on the inside of the door and this had then caused corrosion totake hold and rust from the inside out. So with cold paste around the rust hole I welded it up, excellent no distortion at all after welding, removed the paste and then sanded the small weld down, NOT SO GOOD, It F'ing distored all over the place.
I was not about to spend another small fortune on a 6 month only produced door so I spent most of today skinking and beating the it back into shape and skimming both of the doors.

They both need a stopper coat and final flatting before primer but I'm pretty happy with the results in the end.

I have also stripped the decklid of paint, which I knew had various dents and the push button catch had been pushed in and dented the area above it.

Obviously this needs alot more work.
Progress will be even slower now as we are moving house in two weeks. Think we should really start packing I suppose!
