cool, maybe, robs gunna give mae a good flushing and see where we go from there, but to get it all fixed we may aswell get a new engine!

Gutted!!!! I've just had the same problem with my MK2 16V. Managed to get a replacement engine, at the cost of £100, but had to go all the way to Dover to pick it up 
Right, may be of use to you or not, but I'm selling a 1988 Golf GTI 8V Campaign model in Helios blue, 143k miles, but pulls very strong - no smoke at all. Few scratches here and there but no rust. Being a campaign it has the 90 spec seats, green tint glass, 90 spec steering wheel. Riding on Pirelli P-slot alloy wheels (14"). Flew through its MOT less than a month ago and a fair few months tax left...price, £400 NO OFFERS.
