My knowledge is limited to MK1s and MK2s, but my 2p worth...
Don't rush into anything and take your time. There are lots of MK1 and MK2 GTIs out there; It's a buyers market. Questions:
1. How quickly do you need it?
2. Condition/mileage required?
3. Budget?
In terms of Mk2s I'd go for a G60 or Rallye G60, as there is so much more scope for modifying forced induction. However, there is the problem that they're LHD. Failing that go for a 3-door 16V in Oak Green or black.
If its a MK1 go for a very early (series 1) model which is 1979-1980 or the last Campaigns. I personally wouldn't go for anything in between as they are far less collectable. The exception to the rule for this is non-sunroof models, which are now extremely sought after.

I've got a very nice Mk1 3 door non-sunroof, currently with a Polo Coupe S 1300 motor in, perfect for the 1.8t conversion, you will not find a cleaner shell!!
It currently has new engine and weber carb, shocks & springs (80mm lower) plus std, new rad, std BBS wheels and deep dish 13' steelies, full supersprint exhaust, optional chequer roof, make me some offers...
Even have some EXTREMELY rare Recaro's that I may be tempted to sell with it!
Could be a beautiful project for you As I'm struggling for time on it... make me an offer???

This is a genuine GTI model?
|
Callum
|
No it's a 1300 driver, its a beaut
I bought it off Tim, who had your GTI
It will require a bit more work to convert than a std GTI (if going the 1.8t route), but you find a cleaner shell and I'll eat my hat!
It made your old Mk1 look tatty (which is wasn't by any means)
Just booked a full re-trim for the Skod, so could do with the dollar, as much as I would love to keep it, and know how hard it is to find a good shell, I need to be realistic.

No LFD's I'm afraid Chris. For the right car I have £4000 BUT it must be the right car, you know how particular I am with bodywork etc so it must be mint or be reflected in the price, make sense?
I would never rush into buying a car mate, I dont need a car now but I want one ASAP!!!
Keep the ideas comin guys

I remember driving one of those when it was just a few years old, they are nice
Have a look at what engine's in it, because some have an early type 1.8 but are running Digifant!
I love the seats in them, but make sure it has a really good alarm as they are really easy to pinch!
Talking from experience.....

Its one of a limited run of 449 Sportlines made so not sure if I'm gonna tinker with it yet tbh!
|
Helbydubchick

Don't blame you.
I like cars to be pretty much in there original state tbh especially as that one is quite a rare model.
Natural beauty i say.
